What Is Claude AI?
Claude is an AI assistant created by Anthropic, an AI safety company founded in 2021. Claude uses large language model (LLM) technology to understand and generate text, analyze documents, write and review code, answer questions, and assist with complex reasoning tasks.
Claude is available as a consumer product (Claude.ai), a business product (Claude for Teams/Enterprise), and an API that developers use to embed Claude's capabilities in their own applications and workflows.
How Claude Works
Claude is a large language model — a neural network trained on large volumes of text to understand and generate language. When you send Claude a message (called a prompt), Claude processes it and generates a response based on its training.
Key technical characteristics relevant to enterprise users:
Context window: Claude supports up to 200,000 tokens of context — equivalent to roughly 150,000 words or a small book. This allows Claude to analyze entire documents, codebases, or conversation histories in a single interaction.
Constitutional AI: Anthropic trains Claude using a technique called Constitutional AI, which teaches Claude to follow a set of principles designed to make it helpful, harmless, and honest. Claude is designed to acknowledge uncertainty rather than generate confident-sounding wrong answers.
API access: the Claude API lets developers integrate Claude into their own systems using the Claude SDK. This enables enterprise workflows that go beyond the Claude.ai chat interface.
